A multiplex display is an electronic display device in which the entire display is not driven at the same time.
Instead, the subunits of the display (usually a row or column of a dot-matrix display or a single character, sometimes a single display element of a character-oriented display) are multiplexed, i.e. driven one at a time, but with high switching frequency and visual transients. Combined with stay, the viewer is convinced that the entire display is continuously active.
